Tafsir Al-Baqarah 61: The Children of Israel Became Humiliated by Preferring Their Choice Than God's Choice

Nasehat Muslim

وَإِذْ قُلْتُمْ يَا مُوسَىٰ لَنْ نَصْبِرَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامٍ وَاحِدٍ 

"And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food" 

فَادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُخْرِجْ لَنَا مِمَّا تُنْبِتُ الْأَرْضُ مِنْ بَقْلِهَا وَقِثَّائِهَا وَفُومِهَا وَعَدَسِهَا وَبَصَلِهَا ۖ

So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions."

قَالَ أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَ الَّذِي هُوَ أَدْنَىٰ بِالَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ ۚ اهْبِطُوا مِصْرًا فَإِنَّ لَكُمْ مَا سَأَلْتُمْ

 [Moses] said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked." 

 وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ وَالْمَسْكَنَةُ وَبَاءُوا بِغَضَبٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ ۗ 

"And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allah [upon them]"

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يَكْفُرُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَيَقْتُلُونَ النَّبِيِّينَ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ

"That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allah and killed the prophets without right"

 ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوْا وَكَانُوا يَعْتَدُونَ 

"That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing"

[Surat Al-Baqarah: 61]

Tafsir [Intrepretation]:

واذكروا حين أنزلنا عليكم الطعام الحلو

والطير الشهي، فبطِرتم النعمة كعادتكم، وأصابكم الضيق والملل

And remember when We sent down to you yummy food, delicious bird meat, grace of pleasure as you like, but then your heart becomes bored (with the favor)

 فقلتم: يا موسى لن نصبر على طعام ثابت لا يتغير مع الأيام

Until you say; O musa we are impatient with food that is fixed (that's it), which does not change with the day

 فادع لنا ربك يخرج لنا من نبات الأرض طعامًا من البقول والخُضَر

 والقثاء والحبوب التي تؤكل، والعدس، والبصل

Then pray to your God (Allah subhanahu wata'ala) for us to be expelled to us from the plants of the earth in the form of food from nuts, vegetables, cucumbers, edible grains, fennel and onions

قال موسى -مستنكرًا عليهم-: أتطلبون هذه الأطعمة التي هي أقل قدرًا
وتتركون هذا الرزق النافع الذي اختاره الله لكم؟ 

Moses say-deny them-; Do you ask for lower-quality food, and you leave behind the beneficial sustenance that God has chosen for you?

اهبطوا من هذه البادية إلى أي مدينة، تجدوا ما اشتهيتم كثيرًا في الحقول والأسواق 
If so go any city you want, you will get what you want it much in the field or market

ولما هبطوا تبيَّن لهم أنهم يُقَدِّمون اختيارهم -في كل موطن- على اختيار الله
Then when they go (to find what they want) it becomes clear that they prefer their preference rather than Allah's choice 

 ويُؤْثِرون شهواتهم على ما اختاره الله لهم؛

They prefer their desires above God's choice to them

 لذلك لزمتهم صِفَةُ الذل وفقر النفوس

Then they are always in a despicable nature and a weak soul

وانصرفوا ورجعوا بغضب من الله
لإعراضهم عن دين الله، ولأنهم كانوا يكفرون بآيات
 الله ويقتلون النبيين ظلمًا وعدوانًا؛ وذلك بسبب عصيانهم وتجاوزهم حدود ربهم
And return the adoration of Allah to them because of their opposition to the religion of Allah, their denial of the verse of Allah, and their killing of prophets unjustly, that is because of their disobedience and their opposition to the laws of God
