Tafsir Al-Baqarah 59: Human Sin Causes Torture

Nasehat Muslim

فَبَدَّلَ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا قَوْلًا غَيْرَ الَّذِي قِيلَ لَهُمْ فَأَنْزَلْنَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا رِجْزًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ بِمَا كَانُوا يَفْسُقُونَ
"But those who wronged changed [those words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them, so We sent down upon those who wronged a punishment from the sky because they were defiantly disobeying"
[Surah Al-Baqarah: 59]

Tafsir [Intrepretation]:

 فقالوا بدل حطة: حبة في حنطة، استهانة بأمر الله، واستهزاء 

The children of Israel replace the command of Allah ta'ala to say 'khittah' (free us from sin) to 'khinthah' (seed in wheat), insulting the command of Allah ta'ala

 ولهذا دخلوا يزحفون على أدبارهم
(They enter the land commanded while prostrating) they replace it by entering while crawling over the ass

 ولما كان هذا الطغيان أكبر سبب لوقوع عقوبة الله بهم
This is the great sin that causes them to be tortured

﴿فَأَنْزَلْنَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا﴾
 منهم ﴿رِجْزًا﴾ أي: عذابا ﴿مِنَ السَّمَاءِ﴾ بسبب فسقهم
("Then We sent down to the wrongdoers") of them ("torture") ("from heaven") because they sinned
